History of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale

The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, formerly known as the Fort Lauderdale Art Center, was founded in 1958 as a community-based organization that aimed to promote the visual arts in South Florida. The museum’s early exhibitions and programs were held in various locations, including storefronts and churches, before a permanent location was established in 1963.

 

Over the years, the museum’s collection grew significantly, with a focus on contemporary art and Latin American art. In 2008, the museum received a significant donation of works by the American painter William Glackens, which added to its collection of American modernist art.

 

In 2008, the museum became a part of Nova Southeastern University and was renamed the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. The museum’s collection continued to grow and expand, and in 2019, it underwent a major renovation and expansion that added new gallery spaces and improved its facilities. Today, the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is a leading cultural institution in South Florida, and is dedicated to promoting the visual arts and education in the region.
